sounder
not connected yet
Chrome will show you a short list of what is plugged in. Pick the one that is yours.
why does it ask?
A web page is never allowed to go looking through your ports by itself. So it asks once, it covers
only the port you point at, and you can take it back whenever you like. The names in the list come
from the little chip inside each board (CP2102, CH340) — not
from us, and not from you. After this the page reconnects on its own.
If more than one board is plugged in, pick the one that is your wallet. The page remembers it, and
there is a SWAP button if you ever need the other.
Your wallet is awake. The money is on the board itself — this page only reads it,
and keeps nothing.
Nobody has heard you yet, and on the first day that is normal: baud is made by two
stations hearing each other, so nothing happens until somebody else is in range.
what happens next?
You cannot earn alone, and that is the design rather than a missing feature — a sounding is
work two stations do together, so a wallet on its own has nobody to do it with. Carry it to
another keeper and both of you start earning. Until then the board is yours, your name is on the
air, and nothing here expires.
This page is served from soundingsociety.org, so we could change it. Your money is not here — it is on the board, and this page only reads it. A copy you can keep and run with no website at all is coming; while this is changing by the hour, one copy is the only one that can be right.

what moved
soundings are not listed: this is money that changed hands.
your hails
a page can never spend on its own: your sounder signs it, and you confirm by holding its button.
every station in range can read this. signed, so nobody can forge it in your name, but not sealed. a hail is re-offered until a neighbour says they hold it; you never need to send it twice.
held on the sounder itself, so they are there whether or not this computer was.
hails you carry for others
—
hails that are not yours, held and passed on. this is the antenna doing its work.
the board
No fee and no recipient: a notice goes to everyone in range and to nobody in particular. It is signed with your name, it cannot be taken back, and every book drops it after thirty days.
Ordered by when THIS station heard each one, not by when its author says they wrote it: there is no clock the street shares. The dBm is how far away they were.
pay someone
your sounder signs it with its own key and waits for you to hold its button. this page can never spend on its own.
move between your own halves
both halves are yours, so nothing can leave and no button is needed. this is how a board left somewhere — boxed on a window, up a pole — feeds the half you carry.
stations heard — loudest first
the loudest one is usually the person in front of you.

every line it sends, exactly as it sends it. this is the whole protocol.
